A novel method for manually falling trees

This paper reports the results from a project that used a remotely operated hydraulic flange spreader and a novel holding wood pattern to remove the faller from the base of the tree when it starts to displace. The novel holding wood pattern uses two uncut strips of wood on the backcut side of the tree to hold the tree in static equilibrium while the flange spreader is inserted. Field testing resulted in 38 successes (81%) and nine failures (19%), where success of the method was insensitive to tree species, diameter, and height.
