The "economistic" (market-place) model of nature and of natural process dominates both ecology and renewable resource management in Canada. Reasons for the overwhelming power of this interpretation of biological process are reviewed and "economic outreach" as a consumptive process is examined. Could any image of nature other than the economistic one be compatible with the goals of resource management in industrial society? Post-industrial society? Some alternative historical and current views are discussed. Key words: Resource Development, Resource Conservation, Economics, Non-monetary values
