In Finland, where a high proportion of forested land is owned by smallholders and farmers, a sociological tradition of forest research has evolved. This paper reviews the landmark studies of forest owners and their behaviour. In Canada, where much will be expected of private woodlot owners in the next two decades, this research deserves to be better known and to be emulated, because it is scientifically sound and highly practical.
