In 1967 a demonstration of aerial seeding was carried out on a 23-year-old burn on the Quebec North Shore using treated jack pine seeds. The 320-acre (130-ha) area was scarified with shark-fin barrels and tractor pads. Scarification cost was high due to a very dense, resistant layer of ericaceous shrubs which developed after the fire. Thirty-six thousand viable seeds per acre (89,000/ha) were sown during the fall. One year after seeding, there were 1,350 jack pine seedlings per acre (3335/ha) with a stocking of 53%. Five years after seeding, there were 2,633 jack pine seedlings per acre (6506/ha) with a stocking of 61%. Germination occurred throughout the 5-year period after seeding.
