The U.K. and U.S. present very different research situations. Forest conditions and forestry in each country are discussed and the differing research philosophies described. Particularly significant are the problem solving nature of U.K. in-service research, closely linked with practice, and the contribution of technically trained foresters. The principle forest-related British research agencies are identified and the special characteristics of U.K. research are described. Its methods of deployment of resources and the high return for funds invested provide several indications for possible development of problem-solving, developmental oriented forest resources research in Canada that can make a major impact on practice.
