Various forms of selectivity of herbicides (chemical, physical, physiological, placement, and probability) are described and illustrated with examples from the literature. The point is made that selectivity is not an all-or-nothing proposition, but is frequently the resultant of more than one form of selectivity. Clear recognition of the nature and components of selectivity is essential to the efficient use of herbicides.
