FOREST RESEARCH DEVELOPMENTS IN SWEDEN—TRANSLATION

Up to the beginning of this century, forest research in Sweden was mostly of the trial and error type from which came some step by step improvements in forestry practices but no really sustained progress as they know it today. Modern forest research in Sweden had its modest beginning about 50 years ago. Solidly based on the natural sciences and more recently pushing ahead toward modern machine age developments, Sweden's forest research program is now moving ahead on a broad front and with the strong and eager backing of the forest industries and their organizations, as well as of the Government and the public. Professor Streyffert traces and describes these developments, not only in the more well known fields of silviculture, stand management, forest regeneration, utilization, soil science, etc., but also in the new and fascinating field of forest genetics and forest tree improvement work. Through it all runs a thread of practical reasoning and sound grass roots economics working toward maximum rewards from management of their forest lands.
