Surgical management in gestational trophoblastic diseases

SUMMARY Management of hydatidiform moles includes surgical evacuation and monitoring of human gonadotropin hormone. Hysterectomy may be an option particularly in patients who do not wish to preserve fertility. Although chemotherapy regimes are very effective for the treatment of malignant gestational trophoblastic neoplasia, hysterectomy and extirpation methods also play an important role especially in reducing the amount of chemotherapy and in cases exhibiting drug-insensitive diseases or hemorrhagic complications. This review discusses the indications and the role of surgical interventions during the medical management of women with hydatidiform moles and malignant gestational trophoblastic neoplasia.
