The ancient Khorezm civilization was created in the ancient Khorezm oasis irrigated by the Amu Darya waters and is associated with a sedentary population that knew highly developed irrigation, agriculture, had cities, and statehood. And the early and medieval ancestors of the Karakalpaks are considered to be the tribes of nomads and the semi-sedentary population of the steppe periphery of the Khorezm states – the inhabitants of the steppes of the Aral Sea region; these were pastoralists, who were partly engaged in agriculture and who owned a primitive irrigation technique. But we must not forget that one of the main features of the history of Central Asia and Kazakhstan is the historically established interaction of the population of the oases and the steppe, the mutual influence of nomadic pastoralists and farmers.
