This article is an introduction to the study conducted by the author in the Konkan region which is the 500 kms coastline between Mumbai and Goa. A brief on the formation and character of this coastline is given along with the climate and soil of this region. The methods to investigate this coastline and mapping of its biodiversity as well as socio-economic study is also outlined. It also discussed the coastal communities and fishing industry. It is a prelude to the detailed study of the flora and fauna of this region to arrive at the conservation policy of the biodiversity hotspots in this region.
