Este artigo e parte de um projeto maior que busca descrever e explicar adequadamente os contrastes temporais em sentencas raizes e encaixadas do Portugues brasileiro. Para isto, ele traz uma exposicao e uma avaliacao da sintaxe de tempo postulada por Stowell (1993; 1994), para quem e possivel derivar os estudos semânticos sobre tempo de principios de teoria sintatica motivados independentemente.
