SCREENING METHOD FOR ASSESSING PESTICIDE LEACHING POTENTIAL

Metodos de selecao sao necessarios para determinar quais pesticidas deveriam receber maior atencao com respeito aos problemas ambientais. Varios autores tem proposto metodos de selecao para verificar se determinado pesticida e potencialmente lixiviavel para aguas subterrâneas. O indice Groundwater Ubiquity Score (GUS) desenvolvido por GUSTAFSON (5) tem sido usado como a primeira etapa em abordagem de aproximacoes sucessivas para especificar quais produtos deveriam merecer estudos mais demorados e caros de lixiviabilidade. Entretanto, o indice GUS e empiricamente baseado e apresenta o problema da previsao de valores negativos para pesticidas com meia-vida curta e/ou grande coeficiente de sorcao. No presente trabalho desenvolveu-se metodo para avaliacao da lixiviabilidade denominado indice LIX, tao simples como o indice GUS porem possibilitando mais rapida e melhor visualizacao e interpretacao dos resultados. Abstract Screening methods are required in order to determine which pesticides should receive greatest attention with respect to environmental problems. Several authors have proposed screening methods for determining whether a pesticide is likely to leach to groundwater. The Groundwater Ubiquity Score (GUS) developed by GUSTAFSON (5) has been used, as the first step of a tiered approach for specifying which chemicals should deserve longer attention and expensive studies of leachability. However, GUS is empirically based and has a deficiency due to the prediction of anomalous negative values for pesticides with short half-life and/or large sorption coefficient. In the present work, it was developed a method for evaluating the leachability denominated index LIX as simple as index GUS however enabling faster and better visualization and interpretation of results.
