Our study aims specifically at understanding the phenomenon of the resurgence of Roman Law studies in 12th-century Europe, its paths of penetration in the Portuguese kingdom and its use as a source of assertion of the royal power. Being Afonso III the monarch who begins this process in Portugal, our study will focus its analysis on his government, which will serve as a paradigm for analyzing so many similar processes in other European monarchies.
