In this article, the authors intend showing the work done with families by PICU nurses of Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre as an example of health education so that the family becomes independent upon performing the care in the domicile. The Family Support Program and the Nutrition Support Program have important role for qualifying the caregiver family members whereby the nurses hear them and help them in the resolution of problems besides carrying out a training program related to certain care actions aiming at the hospital discharge.
