This qualitative study aimed to identify the prevalence of the risk factors related to Acute Myocardial Infarction in 258 elderly patients registered in the Hyperdia program in three health centers in Guaparava, in the state of Parana. The data was collected in the patients' homes in the period June 2010 to July 2011, using a semi-structured questionnaire, and was analyzed with the help of descriptive statistics. The results showed that 72.49% were women, with an average age of 72.2 years. The following were evidenced as risk factors: sedentarism (55.81%), heredity (53.87%), hypercaloric intake (27.51%), smoking (25.58%), obesity (24.8%) and alcoholism (8.52%). Considering that the majority of these are modifiable risk factors, the importance of strategies which re-orient and direct control actions beyond medicalization stands out, taking into account the elderly people's particular characteristics in health education actions.
