The research aimed to analyze the studies published in Brazil addressing the use of music in nursing care, regarding publication year, type of research design, sample characterization, type of music used, study objectives, data collection procedures and main results. It is a descriptive, retrospective study and literature review from LILACS and BDENF databases. Twelve studies published from 1993 to 2006 were selected, featuring: the majority were periodical articles, transversal research (7), with a sampling of 4 to 30 patients (6), mainly adults (7), only women (6), and in-hospital environment (7). Classical music was used in most studies (7). The beneficial effects of music, such as improvement of emotional status and pain relief, were observed in 11 of the studies. Considering the data found in this review, the need for more studies on this subject is evidenced.
