The author calls unilateralism to the presentation of our systems of rules and institutions as if they were obeying a single inspirational value. Unilateralism, in this sense, implies the denial, explicit or implicit, that such rules and institutions are permeated by internal stresses that are due to the fact that they are trying to make values which are, in turn, under tension between them. The article examines Luigi Ferrajoli’s position on four areas in which, according to the author, this position is unilateralist in the aforementioned sense: first, the relationship between constitution and legislation, second, the distinction between principles and rules; third, the choice of a certain electoral system; fourth, the problem of war. This unilateralism leads, according to the author, to a distorted presentation by Ferrajoli of the problems of these four areas.
