For the most part, the evaluation of scientific journals is limited to the Impact Factor, which normalizes the number of received citations by the number of publications. Compared to this citation indicator, usage statistics can measure the impact of a journal in realtime and account for the whole readership – not Wissenschaftliche Zeitschriften im Web 2.0 149 just the citing authors. With the rise of e-publishing, these statistics can be computed on the basis of download and click rates. However, global usage statistics are not made available and local data often lacks consistency and comparability. This contribution describes an alternative way to compute global journal usage on the basis of social bookmarks.
