It is important to determine hematological and serum biochemical parameters of sheep during slaughter in order to detect metabolic changes associated with diseases. Blood samples from 97 slaughtered sheep (37 male, 58 female), aged 4 to 6 months old, were collected. The following parameters were determined: serum activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and serum levels of total and direct bilirubin, urea and creatinine. Hematology revealed red (RBC) and white (WBC) blood cells count, hemoglobin concentration (Hb), and packed cell volume. Mean values obtained were: AST = 126 ± 23,9 U/L; GGT = 54,6 ± 15,4 U/L; ALP = 152 ± 90,7 U/L; total bilirubin = 0,28 ± 0,10 mg/dL; direct bilirubin = 0,10 ± 0,04 mg/dL; urea = 41,8 ± 10,3mg/dL; creatinine = 1,48 ± 0,21 mg/dL; erythrocytes = 11,81x106 ± 2,16x106/µL; leukocytes = 7,0x103 ± 2,89x103/µL; Hb = 8,94 ± 1,39g/dL; Packed cell volume = 33,92 ± 5,74%. We conclude that hemogram analysis and all serum constituent levels during slaughter were within normal values for the species.
