This article reviews the current problems of the UK railway industry and inparticular the effective re- nationalisation of Railtrack by the governmentduring 2001. The present state of the industry is placed in the context of theprocess of privatisation, and of the historical development of the sector. Itreviews the current literature and media debate that deals with railprivatisation.
