Utilising data drawn from a study of a social service organisation, this articleaims to understand the relationship between the rationale of organisationaltransformations and the professional status of social workers. It contains anexamination of the original aims of Community Care legislation, its translationby management into processes of re-structuring and alterations in jobspecification, as well as the perspectives of those at the front-line of theorganisation. This enables a theoretical consideration of organisationaltransformation and power and their relationship to the identity of socialworkers.
