What are the new findings? ► Males with diabetes and principally those under insulin treatment present higher pain severity, including more joints affected by pain and higher consumption of analgesics than males without diabetes. We found gender heterogeneity regarding the effect of diabetes on OApain. ► In females, diabetes mellitus has not a significant role on pain severity, considering the number of joints affected and the maximum pain score. For them, only a wider waist circumference had a significant association with pain severity.
