Thisstudypresentstheresults ofhydrogeochemicalstudiescar riedoutattheKosthermal springsinBingol,locatedinEast Anatolia,Turkey.Morethan250 thermalwatersampleswerecollectedonaregularbasisfrom November2006toJanuary2009 tomeasureelementconcentra tionsasamonitorofearthquake precursors.Watersampleswere analyzedusinginductivelycou pledplasmamassspectrometry (ICP-MS).TheB,Ba,Br,andGe concentrationsweremonitored forthreeyearsandrangedfrom 6822 ‐7666,64 ‐101,271 ‐406, and4.1 ‐6.0µgL -1 ,respectively. Thechlorideconcentrations forthisperiodwereinthe 89 ‐127mgL -1 range.Thedata identifysomeelementanomalies atleasttwohourspriortoa majorearthquakeandforsome timeafterwards.Theseanomalies arecharacterizedbydecreasesup to20%inB,Ba,Cl,andGecon centrationsandcanbeattributed tostress-/strain-inducedpressure changesinthesubsurfacewater systems.Fromthisstudy,itcan besuggestedthatthermalsprings inafaultlineareaareidealsites formonitoringprecursorsto earthquakes.
