Scientific development in the academic context is necessary and fundamental, not only for the insertion of a problematizing dialogue, the formation of critical subjects with a posture of questioning, but also for personal development. In the context of private higher education, teachers should encourage students to engage with scientific research in order to develop these pro activity and ability to seek and solve problems. The objective of this study was to obtain information and promote a discussion about the familiarity of students of a higher education institution (HEI) with scientific research. The sample consisted of 400 students, where the majority (98.19%) understood the broad meaning of scientific research, although most of them (83.04%) were never involved in the development of scientific research 91.08% in actively participating in this process. Education professionals need to be aware that the advancement of scientific and technological development, especially in private educational institutions, depends primarily on their efforts towards institutional policies aimed at changing the landscape of scientific research in this sector.
