Abuse in older persons: why physicians need to be aware

Studies from several countries have observed overall prevalence rates of abuse that averaged about 10% in the general older population, but amounted to as high as 40 to 60% when studying specifically older persons suffering from dementia. Such high prevalence rates essentially imply that every physician who cares for elderly persons is “at-risk” to face a situation of abuse.
