I posit that there is not simply just one limit but several different limits of understanding, and that the constitutive reference between understanding and not understanding is different in each case. Distinguishing between the various types of this reference might help us to better understand the fundamental issue as to why, when we are seeking to understand, we are also always confronted with the limits of understanding. I propose that we distinguish four forms in which the otherness of meaning is encountered in a different manner and with differing radicality in each case.
