The subject has at least two meanings: continuity and rupture between theory and clinical practice on the one hand, and continuity and rupture in the therapeutic relationship on the other hand. First, the author briefly analyses the therapist's theory and its consequences on his or her clinical understanding. Then he presents a theory of narcissism in the therapeutic process and the way it can contribute to the understanding of continuity and rupture in the therapeutic relationship. The subject matter is illustrated through a number of clinical vignettes.
