Les rotavirus sont responsables de la mort d’un demi-million d’enfants dans le monde entier chaque année. Les premiers vaccins ont été retirés une année après leur enregistrement à cause d’invaginations. Deux nouveaux vaccins sont maintenant présentés dans deux études de Merck et GlaxoSmithKline chez des enfants de 6 à 13 semaines. Il s’agit pour l’un d’un vaccin monovalent d’une souche atténuée (Rotarix) et pour l’autre d’un vaccin pentavalent basé sur une souche virale bovine avec cinq virus humains-bovins (Rotateq). Ces deux vaccins ont été testés chez plus de 60 000 enfants et se sont avérés efficaces chez 85 et resp. 98% (ces différences devraient être dues à des classifications différentes).
