Summary Adipocytes not only act as the body’s energy warehouse – they also effectively form a highly active endocrine organ. The fat cells in abdominal adipose tissue are a particularly important source of multiple substances that cause the metabolic and cardiovascular complications associated with obesity. A better understanding of these substances, their modes of action and their complex interactions could contribute to the development of new therapeutic strategies for fighting obesity and the resulting complications.
