Aim: In open heart surgery, oxidants and free radicals consisting of after ischemia and reperfusion are responsible for myocardial injury in the first place. N-acetylcysteine is a powerful antiinflammatory and antioxidant agents, therefore we investigated the effect of the prevention of N-acetylcysteine in ischemia-reperfusion injury. Material and Method: The study group composed of two groups of 15 patients underwent coroner artery bypass surgery. Group I consisted of patients treated with N-acetylcysteine (NAC) (n:15), and Group II (control group) (n:15) consisted of patients without any additional medication. Blood samples were collected preoperative, after cross-clamp, postoperative 1th and 5 th days. Serum phospho creatine kinase (CPK), creatine kinase myocardial band (CKMB), troponin I, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) levels were measured.
