For managers confronted with intensive visitor flows in suburban or popular forests, the increasing social demand they observe is accompanied by a sense of growing incomprehension vis-a-vis forest management. In this context, it is important for the ONF, the board that manages public forests in France, to rely on robust data in the field of practices pertaining to forests and representations of the latter to shape its actions. The national survey “Forests and Society” conducted in the fall of 2010 allows comparisons with the previous survey in 2004 and provides more detail about certain aspects.
