The implications arising from biodiversity go beyond the ethical framework of nature conservation. Biodiversity has a direct incidence on the sustainability of our quality of life and of our economic models. Ecosystem services are quite simply indispensable to the well-being and even the survival of mankind. Actions in favour of living beings therefore are of strategic significance. It is essential today to create new tools to finance the necessary investments in natural capital and ensure its sustainability. These market economy tools provide a means of valuating life and ecosystem services without necessarily requiring a “price of life” to be defined. Funds can be raised through compensation mechanisms, social and environmental responsibility schemes or corporate sponsorship under new CTV contracts [contrats territoriaux pour la vie] that focus on local biodiversity, both general and specific. What is important in all these cases is that payment of environmental services is implemented so as to ensure these services are maintained.
