It is important to have an integrated management approach when applying amendments to forests. Such an approach must consider the particular environment (all acidic soils should not be treated in the same manner) as well as the initial mineral nutrient status of the soils (soils with good mineral fertility should not be treated). The first part of the article offers criteria relating to the choice of soils. It goes on to describe the evaluation methods for available nutrient stocks and the fertilisation needed. Finally, a number of manual and mechanised application techniques are illustrated. Anyone contemplating a plan of this type can usefully refer to this set of recommendations.
