There are many tree and forest stand growth models in France but a dearth of pricing models for standing timber. A model was devised for beech in the Lorraine region with estimates based on 1996 prices. This model is sufficiently general in design to be adjusted to other species and circumstances. It applies equally well to even and uneven stands. It takes into account the value of the stems and branches, the quality of the wood based on its dimensions and the silvicultural background of the trees, and logging productivity. The model is hence able to explain the difference in value between several parcels with quite distinct characteristics. Developing such a model for the major French species and regions would be worthwhile.
