Du nombre, pour l'État, à la conscience d'être du Nombre, face à l'État, c'est finalement l'enjeu de la représentation démocratique qui traverse une grande tradition: celle de la statistique sociale, dès le XVIIe siècle, jusqu'aux actuels sondages d'opinion. C'est aussi la question de la publicité du Nombre, à l'origine de la divergence entre la statistique de l'État (INSEE), et la statistique du corps social (les Instituts de sondage). The Role of Numbers in Modern Politics. The problem of « numbers » is consubstantial to that of Representation in Democratic regimes. It involves a grand tradition, that of « social statistics », which goes from the XVII th century, up to the contemporary reliance on opinion polls. This problem extends to that of the publicity given to numbers, a problem which triggered the separation between state statistics (INSEE), and social statistics (Polling institutes)
