Tobacco cultivars Ky 14 and NC 95 were inoculated early in the growing season with tobacco mosaic virus, tobacco vein mottling virus (TVMV) and tobacco etch virus. Leaf samples were analyzed at topping, at harvest and after air-curing. Virus-infected Ky 14 contained the same amount of Fraction 1 protein as did healthy plants. Infection of NC 95 by these viruses decreased Fraction 1 protein as much as 78%. High soluble protein concentration in the TVMV-infected plants parallelled an increase of Fraction 2 protein ranging from 57% to 100% over the healthy plants. This appeared to be at the expense of non-extractable proteins in Ky 14 but was a result of net protein increase and loss of Fraction 1 protein in NC 95. The amount of nitrate nitrogen and free amino acids showed either increase or decrease in green leaves depending upon cultivar, virus and sampling date, whereas total nitrogen content remained relatively unchanged.
