The maintenance energy expenditure associated with Na + , K + -transport and protein synthesis within skeletal muscle was determined for rbST-treated and untreated cows. Somatotropin had no effect on elevating the respiration of skeletal muscle or the partitioning of maintenance energy expenditures within skeletal muscle.
