Administration of silastic implants releasing dihydrotestosterone or 5α-androstane-3α, 17β-diol to 4-, 14- and 20-wk-old bull calves depressed serum concentrations of LH and FSH, both prior to and following castration. The results suggest that 5α-reduced androgens may be involved in the establishment of negative feedback control of gonadotropins, prior to significant testicular testosterone production. Key words: Bull calves, puberty, androgens, gonadotropins
