Newborn calves given colostrum showed an increase of plasma immunoreactive secretin (IRS), that did not occur in fasted animals. Thereafter, fasting plasma IRS levels were high in preruminant calves, with a clear fall 1 h after the morning meal. IRS levels were lower in animals given fish instead of milk protein. The postprandial decrease was no longer observed after weaning. Key words: Calf, secretin, preruminant, ruminant
