In South Africa all the diseases that affect olive trees are of fungal origin (G orter, 1959). O f these, anthracnose is perhaps the m ost destructive. The fruit-decay for which it is responsible was know n in the late twenties to occur in the coastal regions o f the western Cape Province (Verwoerd, 1928). I t was not before 1935, however, tha t the cause of the disease was identified as an anthracnose fungus o f the Gloeosporium type.*
