Centimetre-sized, concentrically laminated structures from lower Athabasca Group strata at Maybelle River and Hook Lake in southwestern Athabasca Basin are interpreted to be organosedimentary clay oncoids that grew in pools in ephemeral river systems or in scattered lakes that developed during an erosional hiatus after deposition of the Fair Point Formation. In the Read Lake area, microscopic laminae are preserved in microcrystalline quartz that cements angular siliciclastic breccia fragments; these are also of probable microbial origin. These observations contribute to a growing body of evidence for life in Proterozoic nonmarine environments. They also suggest a humid regional climate postdating Fair Point Formation deposition and predating deposition of the Read and Smart formations, that have characteristics of flashy braided river deposits laid down in an arid environment.
