Preliminary report on the structural geology of the Clarence Stream - Moores Mills area, southwestern New Brunswick: implications for gold exploration

Significant gold occurrences located in proximity to Devonian granitoid intrusions have been recently discovered in the Clarence Stream area of southwestern New Brunswick. The area straddles the Ordovician St. Croix Terrane and Silurian Mascarene Belt, which are variously affected by four phases of regional deformation. The St. David antiform is interpreted as a megascopic F2-F3 fold-interference structure, the southeastern limb of which is cut by the late-D3, dextral Sawyer Brook Fault. Mineralized quartz veins and breccia units within the Ordovician Cookson Group are structurally associated with thrust-related D2 high-strain zones and folds. Southward, the occurrence of mineralized quartz veins in the Silurian Waweig Formation is influenced by the competency of gabbroic bodies, whereas late-D3 high-strain zones control their present geometry. The distinct lithostratigraphic assemblages and the nature and location of structures hosting the gold mineralization indicate that exploration strategies should not be restricted only to the proximity of specific intrusions or shear zones. La region chevauche le terrane de St. Croix de l’Ordovicien et la ceinture de Mascarene du Silurien, lesquels sont affectes a divers degres par quatre phases de deformation regionale. L’antiforme de St. David est interprete comme une structure d’interference megascopique de plis P2-P3, dont le flanc sud-est est recoupe par la faille de Sawyer Brook, une structure dextre liee aux episodes tardifs de la deformation D3. Des veines de quartz et des breches mineralisees au sein du Groupe de Cookson sont structuralement associees a des zones d’intense deformation et a des plis lies a la deformation par chevauchement D2. Vers le sud, la presence de veines de quartz mineralisees dans la Formation de Waweig du Silurien est influencee par la competence de corps gabbroiques, tandis que des zones d’intense deformation liees aux episodes tardifs de la deformation D3 controlent leur geometrie actuelle. Les differents assemblages lithostratigraphiques, ainsi que la nature et la position des structures hotes de la mineralisation aurifere demontrent que les strategies d’exploration ne devraient pas seulement se restreindre a la proximite d’intrusions ou de zones de cisaillement specifiques.
