Diabetic ketoacidosis in children: diagnosis and management

DKA is most frequent in children less than 5 years old and becomes less common with increasing age. In a carefully analyzed cohort of paediatric patients who had new onset diabetes mellitus (DM) with DKA, 23% of the children presented with DKA. Thirty six percent of children below 5 years of age presented with DKA as the initial diagnosis compared to 16% of children older than 14 years of age. In children with established DM, the risk of DKA is 1-10% patients per year 3 .
