After seeking to conceptualize the notion of the school space, the text analyzes the historical conditions that led history to be elevated to the condition of a propaedeutic discipline and why it remains in the school curricula, even in the face of the fact that it does not seem to be a knowledge that enjoys social prestige, especially in the 20th century. Finally, taking the lack of regulation of the profession as a sign of this status and the suspicion that the discipline policy suffers, the text examines the tense relations among the dominant groups, historiographical production and the teaching of history in Brazil and the author positions himself about the debate on the regulation of the profession. Keywords: school space, history teaching, regulation of the profession, fear of history.
