This paper explores an oral history interview granted by the musician Raul Ellwanger, in the year of 2011, in order to analyze how he refers to the period when he was exiled in Chile and Argentina between 1970 and 1977. When dealing with particular experiences, the article attempts to reflect on the collective experience of the exile of leftists militants during the civil-military dictatorship in Brazil. It features the memory and the narrative constructed from the interview situation as strategies for a reunion with the past and (re)construction of its meaning. Key words: exile, left-wing, Chile, Argentina, Brazilian’s civil-military dictatorship, Raul Ellwanger.
