The aim of this paper is to analyse James Harrington’s thought on the foundations of government in The Commonwealth of Oceana (1656), the best-known expression of his political theory. The main purpose is to discuss the change in the republican conception of government with the introduction of elements apparently unfamiliar to classical republicanism. Keywords: government, empire, authority, Harrington.
