In The Tenure of Kings and Magistrates as well as in later 1650s writings, John Milton reinterpreted the reading of Cicero on the issue of tyrannicide such as had been first formulated by Buchanan. This enabled him to cast aside the theories of his Calvinist predecessors and to reaffirm the intrinsic liberty of man.
