A challenge for teaching LSP : mitigating text and the need for multimodality

International audienceThis article describes how forms of IT writing might be taught in English to French technical communications students, who often have difficulty in adapting textual modes of communication to the multimodal texts needed in the workplace. The article begins by defining the term 'text', understood as a 'frame' rather than as a 'type'. It then describes the parts of the course in which students learn to combine the different modes - textual, visual, HTML - needed to produce a typical technical iText : the user's guide. In conclusion, the text is still seen as a central and relevant part of the LSP classroom, although its teaching must be adapted and enriched by the trend toward an "iTextualization" of the workplace task.Cet article décrit l'intégration de nouvelles formes d'écriture " multimodales " dans l'enseignement de la rédaction technique en anglais. Après avoir défini le " texte ", plus proche de trame discursive que de type de texte, cet article décrit l'enseignement d'un document technique type, le guide de l'utilisateur. Il évalue ensuite les difficultés lors de la rédaction du document dans un environnement multimodal. Nous pourrons surtout confirmer que le besoin d'enseigner le texte n'a nullement disparu de la salle de classe des langues de spécialité. Au contraire, le défi pour l'enseignement réside en sa capacité à traduire le besoin de reformuler ce texte selon de nouveaux cadres de communication
