The current article analyzes the commercial strategies of the slave trade in Santiago de Cuba during the early years of liberalization. After the port of Santiago de Cuba was successfully refitted for handling the marketing of slaves in 1789, the number of slaves introduced into the capital of western Cuba increased substantially. Nevertheless, the entry of these slaves did not necessarily mean that they were to stay put in the town or its surroundings, because reselling served as a means of capitalization for the seller, due to the extraordinary demand that existed in the entire region.
