In this article, the historic background for the birth of the theory of general relativity (GR) is described. GR was born as Einstein’s gravitation theory in accord with his special relativity. The experimental evidence for GR, as well as future prospects with more general ideas, is briefly introduced. Finally the article leads to the question of the philosophical and the scientific effects of GR on human culture.
